@HookedonwildventuresJoin us for Day 2 of our Montebello Islands expedition, where we venture into the remnants of the 1950s nuclear testing site. Where do we go, what do we do? Why is it that folks can pay up to $30k per head to get here? As our drone surveys the potential fishing landscape, we're struck by contrast of amazing, natural beauty beyond its historical scars. The decaying main headquarters stands as a silent testament to the events of the past. Warning signs scattered across the islands serve as a stark reminder of the lingering effects of the nuclear tests. We definitely weren't camping at those spots overnight! Despite the warnings, we're determined to explore further, grappling with the unsettling reality of our surroundings. To understand why the Montebello Islands were chosen for the nuclear tests, we must delve into the geopolitics of the Cold War era. Isolated and strategically positioned, these islands offered the perfect location for military experiments (and that they couldn't do it at the Thames River). The British government was apparently worried that someone would fill a ship full of TNT and blow up London. They obviously couldn't do any testing in their country so they looked at another and The Australian leader at the time agreed to have it done here. The "Buffalo" test, with its staggering yield of 98 kilotons of TNT, was 6 times bigger than Hiroshima! However, the true consequences of the nuclear tests remain a mystery. It wasn't until the mid-1980s that a commission was formed to investigate the errors and oversights of the testing process. Among the findings was a glaring lack of risk assessment, highlighting the reckless nature of the experiments conducted at Montebello. As we reflect on the events that transpired here, Ricky and I are both filled with a sense of awe. Here we are able to appreciate how beautiful the underwater life is. Fortunately, due to its distance from the mainland, it remains as it is. However, it is for this same reason it was chosen to be the location of the nuclear testing.
